Hey everyone, I thought this was really interesting:
http://optexperience.com/blog/item/june-18-2012
It’s a post from OPT’s blog, a side by side comparison of two high level athletes doing 30 squat cleans for time @ 225. What’s interesting is that despite having the exact same squat clean max (320), one of the guys blows through this WoD and maintains a great pace while the other starts to fade fast. Also notice how the fast guy maintains speed out of the bottom the entire WoD, while the slower athlete begins to grind reps out pretty early on. As OPT says in the post “1RM matters only a little, very little.”

That’s an interesting comparison Ben. I’m not sure if his 1RM theory is universal. I mean, if two guys have the same 1RM but one can tolerate a higher lactic acid threshold, then yes, adding a few kg to your 1RM probably won’t make a huge difference but I would like to see a comparison of people with contrasting 1RM’s.
If a weight is 50% of 1RM it will almost always be easier to keep moving than if it’s 70% of 1RM.
I think what we are seeing there though is that it is possible to train at higher lactic thresholds without necessarily increasing 1RM.
Thanks for posting this though! I’m interested to study this concept further.

I think Chris Spealer is a great example of what OPT is talking about though. Even though he can’t move the weights of the bigger guys he can keep moderately heavy weight moving.

I thought it was interesting because it was an epiphany for me, specifically that I’ve been approaching training for this sport all wrong.

The art is fantastic!!! And, I love the gym, reminds a bit of the smaller more intimate space! Nice work!
